Principles of Icon Design

Icon’s play an important part in UX design as they stand as a comprehensible symbol of a software tool, function, or a data file and it is the first thing that gets imprinted in the minds of the users using the software/tool. Creating a high-quality icon requires a thoughtful approach and a lot of practice. Let’s take a look at the principles to keep in mind while designing Icons for an application.

Clarity – This is the most basic concept of Icon design. The Icon should clearly specify its purpose. Icons should not only be easy to understand for one group of people but should be universal across various cultures, age groups, and backgrounds and at the same time consider your audience and use colors that resonate with them.

Readability –  Make sure your icons are easily readable. When working with multiple shapes, trying to leave enough space between them is more readable. It is hard to read an icon that has thinner strokes. If you take a look at Google Maps, they have done an excellent job with their transit icons, they are easily readable at a very small size.

Alignment – Align the elements optically in order to make the icons balanced. Even though the icon is placed correctly, our eyes might read it as an off-kilter. Try shifting the elements a bit to properly align it. Just remember not to fully depend on numbers and use your eye to check the work as well.

Ease of use – The job is not fully done after it’s been drawn to perfection. It requires further testing and preparation to ease the process of making new icons by the contributors, designers to use them in designs, engineers to code them into production, and for users to use them fully.
