How to overcome the barriers to DevOps

DevOps has been developed for a while for more than a decade I should say, but many companies still face challenges to implement it successfully. Some of the most common barriers include natural human resistance to new ideas, budget constraints, and a lack of specific skills. Lack of collaboration between Dev and Ops is one of the main barriers to DevOps. Let’s take a closer look at the barriers and the solutions required for them.

Resistance – One way to handle skeptical employees to a DevOps culture is by creating a DevOps champion or team lead. DevOps champions are subject matter experts in the industry who help grow awareness about DevOps effectiveness and encourage its adoption.

Collaboration Challenges – DevOps aims to collaborate development and operations teams with different ways of working. A DevOps lead can be a mediator and help address these barriers. A suitably skilled DevOps team leader should be tasked to drive this program.

Monitoring Risks – Today’s automated monitoring is integrated with the CI/CD process, including coding and testing. Enterprise solutions provide smart monitoring, wherein, it’s easy to pinpoint areas of failure.

Planning – No DevOps project can be a success without a plan. This is where DevOps champions take the lead by inputting DevOps requirements into the existing project plans. Project owners need to collaborate with DevOps champions to continuously monitor the progress of projects.

Communication – During the COVID-19 pandemic organizations had to use remote teams for their development and since they are geographically scattered around the world, one team might not be aware of what the other team is doing. For this, there are many communication and storage solutions available at the present to avoid any miscommunication between teams.
